More Apple Valley Information
Good schools. Plenty of recreational opportunities. Job growth. Like many Minnesota cities, Apple Valley has all those things. But one thing that Apple Valley has that the others do not is the Minnesota Zoo.
The Minnesota Zoo, which opened in 1978, is home to more than 2,000 individual animals and 504 different species, and covers 485 acres. The Minnesota Zoo is a state agency, unlike most zoos in the United States, which are run by municipalities or private organizations.
The city was ranked No. 20 on Money Magazine’s list of America’s best small cities in 2010 (the last year cities that size were ranked). Apple Valley saw moderate (5.51 percent) job growth in 2010, also according to Money Magazine.
The median age in Apple Valley is 35.6.
Apple Valley schools are also top-notch. Test scores were 22.5 percent higher than the state average in reading and 19.2 percent higher in math in 2010, according to Money Magazine. The high school fields elite teams in a number of sports, and the schools wrestling program leads the way. Apple Valley won back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011, and has won the last six state championships in the sport, dating back to 2006.
