After decades of population decline — the population had gone down in every census since the 1970s — Columbia Heights experienced a resurgence in the last census, as the city’s population grew more than 5 percent to just under 20,000.

According to the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the city was $40,562, and the median income for a family was $50,610.

As of 2009, median age was 39.0, about three and a half years older than the state median. Estimated median household income was $48,743 in 2009, up from just over $40,000 in 2000.

Columbia Heights is also home to the Heights Theater, “the Twin Cities’ longest continually operated show house,” according to the theater’s website.

According to Wikipedia: “A Polish flag and white eagle are on the sign marking the border between Columbia Heights and Minneapolis, visible when entering Columbia Heights on Central Avenue, in celebration of the suburb’s early roots as a Polish-American community.”
