Maplewood, MN is conveniently located just east of St. Paul. If you’re heading north or east out of St. Paul, chances are you’re going to run into Maplewood, possibly the most uniquely shaped city in the state. The city covers just 18 square miles, but due to its irregular shape — most of the town lies north of St. Paul, but there’s also a thin strip running along the entire eastern edge of Minnesota’s state capitol.

Because of that shape, it’s virtually impossible to live in Maplewood without living within 10 minutes of St. Paul. Three freeways — I-35E, I-494 and I-94 — run through or adjacent to Maplewood, and U.S. Highway 61 and Minnesota Highway 36 provide easy access to other points across the Twin Cities. It’s a short 20 minute drive to the Mall of America, and shorter than that to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
But the shape isn’t the only thing interesting about Maplewood.
The city is home to 3M’s corporate headquarters, which leads the way with more than 10,000 employees, according to Maplewood’s 2009 financial report.
Maplewood is also home to Battle Creek Waterworks Family Aquatic Center, one of the recreational jewels of Ramsey County. The park features a shallow water pool, separate activity pool, hands-on sand play area and a large pool deck and lawn areas.
As of the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the city was $51,596, and the median income for a family was $63,049.
