Depending on your perspective, Oakdale is either the edge of a large metropolitan area or the gateway to wide open spaces. On the one hand, it’s less than 10 miles from Oakdale to downtown St. Paul, providing convenient access for commuters. But on the other hand — or in the other direction — the Lake Elmo Regional Park Preserve lies just east of Oakdale. Beyond that is Wisconsin, and all the green space you can handle.

And major highways are available in every direction, as Oakdale is located just north of the intersection of I-94 (a major east-west artery) and I-494 (which wraps around the southern end of the metro area.
The city maintains 30 parks and recreational facilities, including golf, swimming, biking and tennis, along with other team sport venues, like basketball courts, soccer fields and baseball and softball diamonds.
Oakdale is also a pretty good place to get an education. In 2011, test scores were 13.3 percent higher than the state average in reading and 23.4 percent higher in math, according to Money Magazine.
Despite being close to the heart of the metro area, air quality in Oakdale remains excellent. The air quality index—measured in the number of days ranked as “good”— is 95.0 percent.
