Covering just over six square miles, South St. Paul is tucked along the banks of the Mississippi River. The city is also home to the 6.5-mile South St. Paul Riverfront Trail, which is built atop a levee between the river and downtown South St. Paul. In addition the city maintains 240 acres of parks and green space.

I-494 runs through the south end of town, and Highway 52 forms the western border of the city, which shares a border with St. Paul and is just 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. South St. Paul is also conveniently located just minutes from the Mall of America and Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport.

Based on the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the city was $45,216, and the median income for a family was $54,119.
